Most people can identify a honey bee. These gold and brown insects are a familiar sight in gardens, fields and parks as they fly from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen.

Honey bees and other pollinators play a vital role in most land-based ecosystems. In a relationship that began in the Cretaceous Period, flowers provide insects with nutrients, and in return insects spread pollen to other flowers, enabling the plants to reproduce and spread.

The honey produced by a colony of honey bees makes their nests a valuable source of food for many animals, including man. Man began keeping bees as long as 7,000 years ago (perhaps even longer).
